Race Street Pier Proposal

Race Street Pier is a cool waterfront park in Philadelphia that extends 500 feet into the Delaware River, revealing sweeping views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and waterfront. Located at N Christopher Columbus Blvd and Race Street, it is open all year round, 7 days a week, from 7 am to 11 pm. This multi-level space features a raised promenade and lower-level pathway with a grassy area, benches, and trees. There are lots of places to sit and en.joy the views. It’s a lovely space that is open to the public to recreate and relax. It also happens to be a perfect place to have a surprise proposal, and that is exactly what this couple did!

The proposal was disguised as a couple’s photos session so when I met them at the Race Street Peir we started off by taking some photos along the path. Then, when we got to the tip of the pier, I positioned the couple in a way that he could get down on one knee while she was gazing out across the water with no idea what was about to happen when she turned around! It was a fun way to plan the surprise and enable us to get all set up for the proposal moment without her knowing the surprise that was about to happen. Once she turned around, she was in complete shock and elation. After some kind words and professing his love, he popped the question, “Will you marry me?” and with a “yes!” the ring was put on her finger, and it was official!

Frequently Asked Questions About Photos on Race Street Pier

When planning a proposal in Philadelphia, it is always good to plan ahead and do your due diligence to make sure things go smoothly. Here are a couple of frequently asked questions when taking photos at Race Street Pier that might be helpful if you are planning a photo session or engagement moment on the pier:

1. Do I need a permit to take photos on Race Street Pier?

This is an important question! There are some public Philadelphia parks that do require a permit for proposal and engagement photos, and it is good to know in advance if the location you are planning on requires this. Race Street Pier does not require a photo permit. It used to, but the policy has since changed. Because policies can change from time to time, it is always best to check directly with the sources. Here is a link to the Delaware River Waterfront.

2. Will it be crowded during the proposal?

Race Street Pier is a popular place for people to recreate and relax. There are also events on the pier or other gatherings, such as yoga classes.  It’s hard to predict if there will be people or events on the pier on the day and time you select, but here are a few tips that can help. Choosing a weekday rather than a weekend can typically reduce the amount of foot traffic.  Choosing a quieter time of day, such as morning, you may find that there are fewer people. In the chillier months, there are also fewer people walking, picnicking, and using the space.

3. What’s the best place to propose on  Race Street Pier?

Choosing a location that reveals the views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge is ideal.  My two favorite places are the very tip of the upper level or close to the water on the bottom level. There are so many pretty angles and locations along the pier in every season.  If you are planning a proposal, it’s important to make sure that the exact location is selected ahead of time so that all goes smoothly on the day of the proposal.

4. What’s the best time of day to propose on Race Street Pier?

As far as lighting goes, my suggestion would be to avoid midday when the sun is directly overhead.  This can cause harsh shadows and less flattering light. The mornings, afternoons, or evenings offer better options.

3 Reasons to Propose at Race Street Pier

                1. The views!

I would say the number one reason people choose to propose at Race Street Pier in Philadelphia to get engaged is the views. Being next to the water offers a romantic backdrop for this special moment. The Benjamin Franklin Bridge adds an impressive element, and the whole area is ideal for photos.

                1. Where the City meets Nature

One of the unique features of Race Street Pier is that it is where the urban city elements converge with nature’s beauty. There is something special about being in the city while still experiencing nature. Race Street Pier is one of these special locations that allows you to enjoy both at the same time.

                1. Location

Race Street Pier is an easy walk to many popular areas of the city. After getting engaged, you can stroll into Old City to celebrate with a delicious meal or fancy cocktail. In the warmer months, you could walk along the river down to Spruce Street Harbor Park, and in the winter months, you could pop over to the ice skating rink if that is up your alley. Race Street Pier is situated within walking distance of fun activities and tasty bites.
