This surprise proposal at Bartram’s Garden was so touching! He picked a place in Philadelphia that had special meaning for them and planned out the moment perfectly. I love that he chose a thoughtful location full of nature and their own personal history to pop the question and step into the next chapter of their relationship together. The location you choose for a proposal is important, as it can be a symbol of your love and your love story, an expression of your care. It creates an atmosphere as soon as you arrive, and it can be a part of the intention you set for the two of you. This will be personal to each couple, and I think Bartram’s Garden was the perfect place for these two.

After the proposal moment and the hugs and kisses, and the shock and surprise had settled down, we explored the different areas at Bartram’s Gardens. The couple was very familiar with the lay of the land and had some of the locations where they wanted photos, and then we found more pretty places throughout our walk. There is definitely no shortage of photo locations at this Philadelphia public garden. A sunny walk around the garden on a summer morning was such a sweet start to the day!

Located in the southwest section of Philadelphia is this 50-acre public garden and park. It is situated along the banks of the Schuylkill River at 5400 Lindbergh Boulevard, and they offer an amazing array of programming and a respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday city living. There is no cost to visit, and they are open to visitors every day. Some of the programs they offer include kayaking, fishing, and biking. Bartram’s Garden has a farming program, summer programs for youth, and many other wonderful opportunities to learn, connect with the community, and be in nature. Check out their website for all their most up-to-date calendars of events and follow along with them on Instagram
The historic barn at Bartram’s Garden was once used for storing tools, supplies, and even animals. Now it is used for community programming, and the outside facade is perfect for engagement photos. The huge weathered barn doors are lovely, and the carefully placed stones hold their own charm. The combination of the natural beauty of the land, native plants, and the historic structures really creates an intriguing and welcoming space.

Here are the top reasons I vote yes to planning your surprise proposal at Bartam’s Garden in Philadelphia.
1. Great for Photos!
There are lots of different places for photos, including historic buildings, flowers, and lush greenery. You get a variety of backdrops all in one spot! There is even a distant view of the Philadelphia Skyline. Each season there is a different feel, from the bright greens of spring to the full bloom of summer, and then, of course, the bold colors of foliage in the fall.
2. It’s free and open to the public
Some places around the city have entrance fees or photography permit fees, so finding a beautiful location that is completely free is a bonus! There are events and even weddings on location; it’s a good idea to be mindful of that when planning out your engagement.
3. It’s a peaceful oasis
Being in nature gives a welcome feeling of calm and can set the tone for your proposal. Getting away from the pulse of the city and being able to focus on each other feels extra special. You can even go down by the banks of the Schuylkill River or walk through the garden or the fields. There is much to explore at Bartram’s Garden!
4. Creating memories
Having your proposal at Bartam’s Garden will not only be memorable in the moment, but could also become a lovely place to revisit for years to come and remember this special proposal moment. I love the idea of having a beautiful place to visit that can spark the butterflies and excitement felt on the proposal day. Batram’s Garden is a perfect place to keep coming back to for boat rides, walks, picnics, and so much more.
