Franklin Institute Surprise Proposal

Surprise Proposal at Philadelphia Museum

This Franklin Institute Surprise Proposal was unlike any proposal I have photographed before. It’s not every day that you get the chance to photograph a proposal in a planetarium! I mean who doesn’t want to get proposed to under the starry skies? Can you think of a more romantic or unexpected location? I absolutely loved this out-of-the-box idea. It was elegant and thoughtful, creative and fun! This Philadelphia Science Museum has many different amazing exhibits, beautiful halls, and grand spaces, but I think the Fels Planetarium was the best location for this couple to get engaged. What a super cool location, unforgettable moment, and all-around top-notch experience. I would not have thought of this as a location to get engaged, but I am so glad they did! It was definitely a “wow” moment and I was happy I was able to photograph it for them.

Surprise Proposal at The Planetarium

Imagine being told you are going to an award ceremony out of town with your boyfriend. You are then greeted by the Franklin Institute staff and led up the elevator and into what should have been an event space but instead, when the door opens you are transported into the otherworldly atmosphere of the night sky. Oh, the surprise and delight! It always touches me to hear the great lengths people go to in order to keep the proposal plans under wraps. The stories that are spun and the intricate plans that are made behind the scenes to pull off such a spectacular moment – all worth it!

Planning a proposal is exciting and can be a little bit nerve-wracking. Getting everything set up while keeping it a secret is not an easy feat, especially when you are planning an out-of-town proposal. This Franklin Institute proposal was extra special and it was a moment that will not soon be forgotten.

Cheers to getting married!

A candle and rose petal path lead right up to the altar in the middle of the planetarium. All the details were thought of. There was chilled champagne waiting for the couple to toast and sip to their lifetime together. Everything was perfectly set for the down-on-one-knee moment. It really was special to see the it all come together. The team at the Franklin Institue did a wonderful job coordinating all the moving parts and executing the vision for this sweet moment for this amazing couple.

Franklin Institute Surprise Proposal

After the down-on-one-knee moment in the planetarium, we started to explore the Franklin Institute for other places for couples photos to commemorate this occasion. We headed downstairs into the Benjamin Franklin Memorial & Jordan Lobby where there is a huge statue of Bengimin Fraklin. I love the idea of a museum for the backdrop of engagement photos. There are some pretty great museums in Philadelphia and this one has some impressive features. There is a grand staircase and that is popular for photos. You can even go into some of the science exhibits for some cool images. From the rooftop deck to the gold elevator doors there seems to be something interesting and photo-worthy at every turn in this Philadelphia museum space.

Philadelphia Museum Engagement

Museums may not be the first place you would think of for a wedding, event, or proposal but they are certainly a cool location to consider. Many museums do have fantastic event spaces, special cocktail hour locations, and unique guest experiences that can make your celebration exceptional. At least two museums in Philadelphia have rooftop decks (Franklin Institute and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts). Many have indoor and outdoor spaces and experience in creating a fun and seamless experience. If you are looking for something non-traditional, creative, and fun I encourage you to have a peek at some of Philadelphia’s museums as a venue for your next gala, event, gathering or private engagement. From the American Swedish Historical Museum in FDR Park to the Penn Museum in West Philadelphia there are impressive museums all over the city.

Rooftop EngagementPhotos at The Franklin Institute

Did you know that there is a private rooftop at the Franklin Institute that can be used for photos, weddings and events? It has cool Philadelphia skyline views and was perfect for photos. The proposal was actually originally planned to be done on the rooftop, but rain showers got in the way of that plan and we had to shift inside. Luckily the clouds cleared momentarily and we were able to sneak outside for a few photos. If you are getting couples photos in the city, capturing a few up high surrounded by the center city buildings feels extra special. It all worked out wonderfully.

After the photos were completed, the couple headed back inside and shared a catered meal inside the planetarium to celebrate together the start of their forever. What an incredibly epic and thoughtful proposal!
